Hokkaido Classic is the course Japanese golfers name when you ask what is worth flying for. Designed by Jack Nicklaus through the birch and pine forests of Hokkaido, it is perennially ranked among the country's very best: broad, strategic corridors inspired by the landscapes of Nicklaus's Ohio home, immaculate northern turf, and a celebrated clubhouse built from fragrant hinoki cypress timber.

The practicalities are almost comically convenient — the first tee is roughly twenty minutes from New Chitose Airport, so you can land from Tokyo at nine and be striping drives by eleven. Summer is the season: while the rest of Japan swelters, Hokkaido offers dry air, long evenings and fairways at their peak. Pair it with Sapporo's food scene or a resort stay in Niseko or Tomamu, and you have the northern golf trip done properly.

Getting there

Only 20 minutes by taxi from New Chitose Airport — Hokkaido's main gateway.

Nearest station: New Chitose Airport Station (JR Chitose Line). We include precise, bilingual directions with every confirmed booking — and can arrange a private car with golf-bag space if you'd rather skip the trains entirely.

Visitor FAQ

When is the season at Hokkaido Classic?+

Roughly late April to early November — the course closes under snow in winter. July to September offers the best combination of weather and conditioning.

Is it worth adding Hokkaido to a Japan golf trip?+

If you are traveling June–September, absolutely: cooler weather, Japan's top-ranked Nicklaus design, and superb food in Sapporo. Flights from Tokyo take about 90 minutes and the course is 20 minutes from the airport.

Are caddies required?+

Caddied play is the standard here and elevates the experience — the caddies know every sightline and green contour on the course. Walking with a caddie is part of what makes this club special.
