The short answer
Hakone's golf is spread across Sengokuhara, the shore of Lake Ashi, Hakone-Yumoto and the Sagami Bay coast at Yugawara and Odawara. Weekday green fees at the 10 courses below start from about ¥7,600, up to about ¥26,000 for a caddie round at Daihakone, home of the JLPGA's CAT Ladies. Some high courses close or scale back from January to February. Hakone Country Club requires a member's introduction. Golf Caddie Japan books these courses in English for ¥6,000 per player per round (¥8,000 per round for a solo booking).
Hakone is where Tokyo goes for onsen, mountain air and views of Lake Ashi — and it has been a golf destination for over a century. Fujiya Hotel opened a course in Sengokuhara in 1917. Below are the 10 courses we book for overseas visitors staying in Hakone, and the detail most guides skip: which ones you can reach without a car, and which ones slow down in winter.

Golf in Hakone at a glance
- Where the courses are: Sengokuhara (Fujiya Sengoku, Daihakone, Hakone Kohan), the shore of Lake Ashi and the Hakone Pass (Hakone-en, Hakone Kurakake, Ashinoko), Ashinoyu (Hakone Yunohana), Hakone-Yumoto (Odawara Yumoto), and the Sagami Bay coast (Yugawara, Odawarajo).
- Weekday green fees: from about ¥7,600 for self-play; about ¥26,000 for a caddie round at Daihakone in November.
- Getting there: Hakone-Yumoto Station is the gateway. One course runs a club bus from there; most others are a 25–45 minute taxi ride.
- Winter: the high courses close or scale back from about January to February. Check before you book a winter date.
- The famous name: Hakone Country Club requires a member’s introduction, so it is not open to groups of overseas visitors.

Which course fits your trip?
- One round to remember: Daihakone, a JLPGA tournament course with a caddie on every round, or Fujiya Hotel Sengoku for a century of history.
- Staying in Sengokuhara: Fujiya Sengoku, Daihakone and Hakone Kohan are all in Sengokuhara.
- Staying at Hakone-Yumoto: Odawara Yumoto, with a club bus from the station — but not on a Thursday.
- Mt. Fuji over the lake: Hakone-en and Hakone Kurakake, both near Lake Ashi.
- Sea views: Yugawara and Odawarajo over Sagami Bay, or Hakone Yunohana from above.
- Best value: Hakone-en from about ¥7,600 in December, and Hakone Yunohana, Hakone Kurakake, Ashinoko, Yugawara and Odawarajo at about ¥8,000–¥10,000 on weekdays.
- Travelling on your own: ask us. We have placed a single player at Hakone Yunohana; most other courses prefer groups of two or more.
- Winter golf: Hakone-en is open all year. On the Mt. Fuji side, courses in Shizuoka also stay open — see our Mt. Fuji golf guide.
Getting there without a car
- To Hakone: the Odakyu Romancecar from Shinjuku to Hakone-Yumoto takes about 90 minutes, or the Shinkansen to Odawara is about 35 minutes from Tokyo.
- To the course: take a taxi from Hakone-Yumoto or Odawara, or a club bus where there is one. Book the taxi the night before for an early tee time; your hotel can help.
- Highway bus: Odakyu highway buses from Shinjuku stop at Fujiya Sengoku and Hakone-en.
- Travel light: rent clubs at the course (about ¥3,300–¥4,950 a set), or ship your bag ahead by takkyubin courier.
- On the day: once your booking is confirmed, we send the nearest station, taxi times and a map link. Check live train times in Google Maps on the morning of your round.
Before you go
- Tattoos: some clubs refuse players with tattoos, and many clubhouse baths do not allow them. Tell us when you book.
- Lunch break: most courses in Japan stop for lunch between the two nines. Some plans include lunch.
- Rentals: left-handed and women’s sets are limited. Ask when you book so we can check.
How booking works
Most Hakone courses take reservations only in Japanese, and some only by phone. Send us your dates and where you’re staying, and we reply in English within 24 hours with course options and a written quote. Our fee is ¥6,000 (about US$40) per player per round, tax included (¥8,000 per round for a solo booking); green fees are paid at the course on the day. Once the fee is paid, we contact the course, confirm the final price with you and book. If we can’t secure it, the fee is refunded in full.
