Can You Play Golf Alone in Japan? A Single-Player Booking Guide
Travelling alone doesn't have to mean leaving golf out of the trip. The first question is whether you want to join other players — or have the tee time to yourself.

The short answer
Single players can find golf in Japan, but a one-person booking is not a promise of playing alone. Check whether you will join a group, when the round becomes confirmed, and any minimum-player or surcharge rules. Golf Caddie Japan checks course acceptance for your dates in English; our booking fee is ¥6,000 per player per round, tax included, with green fees paid directly to the course.
Yes, you can request a round in Japan as one player. What you cannot assume is that every course accepts singles, or that a single-player booking gives you a private tee time. Start with the type of round you want, then check the conditions for that course and date.
Golf Caddie Japan is an English-language golf reservation service. We can check whether a club accepts your single-player request and explain the conditions before you decide. We do not guarantee access to every club or maintain a guaranteed pool of playing partners.
One player, three different booking situations
Joining a group: single-entry golf
In a single-entry plan, you reserve one place and play with other people. Rakuten GORA’s official one-person booking guide describes this matching system. Each plan has a minimum number of participants; if that minimum is not reached by the stated decision time, the round may not go ahead.
GORA normally makes that decision at noon on the day before play. Check the actual plan, rather than treating an application as an unconditional confirmation. This matters if you are planning a long journey to the course.
Playing completely alone: private solo or 1B
This is a different request. You want one player in the tee time, without being paired with anyone. GORA’s 1B explanation notes that some courses allow it, but a plan that can proceed with one applicant can still involve pairing on the day.
Ask: “Will I play alone, without pairing, and is there a solo supplement?” Get the answer for the specific date and plan. A label saying that one person is enough to confirm the round is not, by itself, a private-solo guarantee.
Playing as two: 2B or a guaranteed twosome
If a friend can join you, ask whether a two-player booking is available. A 2B guarantee means the two of you will not be paired with other players; it does not mean there is no small-group surcharge. Rakuten GORA explains the distinction between a twosome guarantee and no twosome supplement.
Do not reserve for two when only one person will attend. A reduction in players can change acceptance, price or cancellation conditions.
Why a single-player request can be declined
The useful distinction is the booking plan, not simply whether a course has a public website or an empty-looking tee sheet. Look for clubs that explicitly offer single-entry places or confirm that they can accept one visitor on your dates.
A request may not work when:
- The club accepts visiting groups but not individual overseas players.
- The plan requires two, three or four players, or a matching group does not reach its minimum.
- The club requires a member introduction or has other visitor restrictions.
- The club cannot support the language or check-in arrangements you need.
- You need private solo play, but the available option involves pairing.
A course’s acceptance of a group is not proof of solo availability. Conditions can change, so we check the specific player count and booking plan for each new request.
Also distinguish a group representative from a member sponsor. A booking form may need the name and contact details of the player responsible for the reservation; that does not, by itself, mean a member introduction is required. The course’s admission rules are a separate check.
Should you try a weekday?
If your itinerary allows it, give us a weekday alternative and more than one acceptable start time. That gives us more dates to check; it is not a promise of acceptance, a lower price, or a private round. Check Japanese public holidays too — a weekday on the calendar may have holiday booking conditions.
Before travelling to a matched round, confirm its status and the latest arrival time. If it can remain provisional until the previous day, keep a backup activity and avoid treating transport plans as proof that your golf is confirmed.
Booking yourself through Rakuten GORA
Rakuten GORA can be useful if you can work with Japanese booking information and meet the plan’s requirements. Its official site explains that the site and course emails are in Japanese and asks overseas visitors for contact details usable in Japan and their local stay address. Its FAQ states that the reservation service itself is free; playing and rental charges are separate.
Single-entry applications must be made by the player. Article 22(3) of the Rakuten GORA terms prohibits proxy applications for one-person bookings. Golf Caddie Japan does not apply for those plans on your behalf. Our service checks options the course permits us to arrange separately.
Read the minimum-player rule, decision time, cancellation policy, language requirements and rental availability before applying. If you need English help instead, compare the options in our English golf booking services guide.
How to request a solo round through Golf Caddie Japan
Use our tee-time request form and tell us:
- Dates and flexibility: your preferred day, alternatives and acceptable start times.
- Where you are staying: the town or hotel area, and how you plan to reach the course.
- Pairing preference: happy to join others, or private solo play only. Do not assume the other golfers will speak English.
- Budget: the amount available for the course, rentals and our service fee separately.
- Equipment: rental-club handedness and any shoe-rental needs.
- Language or access needs: anything the club needs to approve before a reservation.
Golf Caddie Japan checks acceptance and availability, sends a written quote with the relevant conditions, and proceeds with the reservation after your agreement and service-fee payment. Wait for the final booking confirmation before treating the round as secured.
Our fee is ¥6,000 per player per round, including tax. You pay green fees directly to the golf course. Rental equipment and any solo or small-group supplement are additional if applicable; use the quote to check the complete cost. See our booking terms and golf cost guide.
We provide golf reservation assistance, not a tour or transport service. If you need transport support, ask about an introduction to a partner hire-car provider; that is separate from the golf reservation.

Quick answers
Can I book golf in Japan as a single player?+
Yes, where the course or booking plan accepts single players. You may be paired with other golfers. Acceptance depends on the club, date and plan; an available tee time for a group does not automatically mean a place is available for one person.
Does a Japanese one-person booking mean I play alone?+
Not necessarily. A single-entry plan usually matches individual golfers into a group. Ask specifically for private solo play or 1B without pairing if that is what you want, and have the course confirm the condition.
Can Golf Caddie Japan book Rakuten GORA one-person plans for me?+
No. Rakuten GORA's one-person booking terms require the applicant to be the player and prohibit proxy applications. Golf Caddie Japan checks course-approved booking options separately; it does not bypass those terms.
What does Golf Caddie Japan charge for one player?+
The booking service fee is ¥6,000 per player per round, including tax. Green fees are paid directly to the course. Rentals and any small-group supplements are separate and should be checked in the written quote. A request is not a confirmed reservation.
