Fuji Golf Course

Fuji Golf Course opened on 1 August 1935, which makes it a pre-war course — a rarity in Japan, where most of the courses visitors play were built during the post-war boom. It was laid out by Kazue Akashi, one of the small group of architects working in Japan's first golf era, and the club's own account of the construction is telling: the holes were cut by hand out of the lava plateau at the foot of the mountain.

What that produced is unusual for the region. Rather than the tight, climbing routing you often get near Fuji, the fairways here are wide and, by the club's own description, flat throughout, separated by stands of red pine. The single bentgrass greens are quick, and the grain runs away from the mountain — a local read worth knowing before you putt.

And the mountain is right there. Fuji sits on the northern shore side of Lake Yamanaka directly in front of the course, close enough to fill the frame rather than sit on the horizon.

For overseas visitors the practical details are favourable: carts are GPS-equipped and may be taken onto the fairway, you can choose between a caddie and self-play, all major cards are accepted, and there is a large communal bath at the end. We have arranged a round here for a visiting family — for a July 2026 weekday the club quoted ¥25,100 per player for that date, with rental clubs at ¥5,500 and shoes at ¥2,200.

Getting there

About 10 minutes by car from Yamanakako IC on the Higashi-Fujigoko Road, on the northern shore of Lake Yamanaka. Roughly 2 hours from central Tokyo.
